Swene Family History

Notes

  1. The names SWAINE, SWAINES, SWAYN, SWAYNES, SWANE, SWANES and SWENE all occur in the Parish Registers at Penn, Staffordshire but the spelling SWENE became standard in the middle of the Seventeenth Century.
  2. The Christian name KINBARRA is a variation of the name of Saint Kyneburgha, third daughter of Penda, the pagan King of Mercia. She founded a nunnery at Castor in Northamptonshire in 650 A.D. and was eventually reinterred in the Abbey Church of Peterborough in the Eleventh Century when a shrine was erected over the relics of Saint Kyneburgha and her sister Kyneswitha. The monks of Peterborough celebrated 7th March in their memory while the Parish Church of Castor and Ailesworth is the only church dedicated to Saint Kyneburgha’s memory.
