WILLIAM ALLAN, candlemaker, of Prestonpans (parish church), East Lothian, m. 3 Jul 1740 at Tranent (parish church), East Lothian, HELEN, bapt 24 Jul 1720 at Tranent, dau of ALEXANDER COWAN, candlemaker, of Tranent and his wife JEAN (née ARESKINE). On 8 Dec 1762 William acquired property in Prestonpans from Margaret, Grizzel and Ann Warden; on 1 Dec 1798 his eldest son Alexander was seized ‘in 2 houses with the Brewerie and piece of ground thereto belonging and little house next to the Brewerie in Prestonpans’; Alexander Allan sold this property on 19 Aug 1801. William Allan d. before 1798 having had issue:

ALEXANDER ALLAN of Hillside and Glen, b. 24 Mar 1746/47, bapt 29 Mar 1747 at Prestonpans (witnesses Alexander Cowan, Alexander Allan), m. 11 Oct 1787 (marriage contract dated 9 Aug 1788) in Edinburgh, ANN, bapt 19 Aug 1767 at St. Cuthbert’s, Carlisle, dau of THOMAS LOSH, calico printer, of Carlisle and his wife ANN, dau of WILLIAM NIXON. See Losh Family History and monumental inscription in St. Cuthbert’s. He was admitted as a burgess of Edinburgh on 8 Apr 1772 and a gild brother on 5 Apr 1775, founded Alexander Allan & Co. (Bankers) of 40 Princes Street and 126 High Street, Edinburgh circa 1776 and matriculated his Arms at the Court of the Lord Lyon on 20 Feb 1813. He had a town house at 20 Charlotte Square, Edinburgh, which was purchased from Major General Alexander Dixon of Mount Annan and a country estate of 3,500 acres at Glen, near Innerleithen, Peeblesshire, which was purchased from John Plenderleith for £10,500 in 1796 and sold to Charles Tennant (later Sir Charles), ancestor of the Lords Glenconner of Glen, for £33,140 in 1852. The Hillside Estate, consisting of a house with 6 acres, 3 roods and 11 falls of land situated south and east of Calton Hill, Edinburgh was purchased from James Grant, merchant, of Edinburgh, on 20 Dec 1785. The land had originally been acquired from the Governors of George Heriot’s Hospital. The Hillside Estate was developed by William Henry Playfair as part of the second New Town of Edinburgh in 1821-23 and the family retained the feu duties and acquired the freehold of a number of houses in Hillside Crescent, Edinburgh. Alexander Allan was painted by Sir Henry Raeburn while, at the same time, his wife Ann and their youngest dau Matilda were painted together by Raeburn – both paintings were sold in 1908. He d. 11 Dec 1825 (P.C.C. will dated 4 Jan 1823 and proved 3 Aug 1826) at his house in Hillside Crescent, Edinburgh and she d. 10 Jul 1846 (Edinburgh will dated 7 Aug 1833 and proved 5 Jul 1847) and they were both buried in the Old Calton Burial Ground, Edinburgh in the plot purchased in Jan 1790 (Alexander Allan's Burying Ground) having had issue (with six other children who died in infancy):

(signature), Lord Provost of Edinburgh 1829-31, of 11 Hillside Crescent, Edinburgh and Glen, later of 7 Chichester Terrace, Brighton, Sussex, b. 20 Aug 1788 in Hillside, Edinburgh, bapt 23 Aug 1788 at St. Cuthbert’s by Rev Moodie, Edinburgh, admitted as a burgess and gild brother of Edinburgh on 12 Sep 1817, member of the Council of the Royal Company of Archers, member of the Pitt Club, m. 1 Aug 1829 at Loughton, Essex by Rev Anthony Hamilton, Archdeacon of Taunton and Rector of Loughton, Elizabeth, b. 28 Jun 1794, bapt 23 Jul 1794 at St. Peter’s, Leeds, widow of Richard Wormald of Cookridge Hall, Adel, West Yorkshire (who d. 10 Jan 1823 having been burned to death while reading in bed) and eldest dau of Benjamin Gott of Armley House, Leeds and his wife Elizabeth, dau of William Rhodes of Wentbridge and Abdy. After his father’s death William had Glen House rebuilt to a design by William Henry Playfair and the estate landscaped but, as a result of large balances owing to Alexander Allan & Co., he had to move to Boulogne in France, where he was living as a ‘remittance man’ in 1853-54: despite the sale of Glen (see above), the sum of £12,201 17s 7d was still outstanding on 7 Jun 1854. He d.s.p. 6 Jul 1868 (Will dated 11 Jul 1867 and proved 24 Oct 1868) at Brighton, she d. 26 Oct 1880, aged 86, at 27 Sussex Square, London and they were both buried in Overdean Cemetery, Brighton.
  2. Thomas, banker, of Alexander Allan & Co., of 4 Hillside Crescent, Edinburgh and Somerset Cottage, Camberwell, London, b. 27 Sep 1794 in Edinburgh, admitted as a burgess and gild brother of Edinburgh on 12 Sep 1817, who had natural issue by Isabella Smith or Catherine McDearmid:

    2. Mary, b. 7 Aug 1825, m. 2 Jun 1851 at Acomb, near York, Rev John Robin, b. 13 Dec 1820, educ Edinburgh University, Minister of Burntisland, Fife 1849-73, son of Robert Robin, farmer, and his wife Sarah (née Adam). She d. 22 Nov 1887 and he d. 8 Dec 1891 having had issue: 2 sons and 2 daus.

Catherine, of Plantation House, Acomb, m. 28 Oct 1848 at York, Captain John Augustus Keyt, 85th Foot (retired circa 1853), only child of Lieutenant Colonel John Thomas Keyt, C.B., 51st and 84th Foot, who was severely wounded near Lezaca in the Pyrenees on 31 Aug 1813 and commanded the light troops of Colonel Mitchell’s Brigade at the battle of Waterloo, and his wife Mary (née King).
    He m. 14 Feb 1853 at St. George’s, Hanover Square, Anne, dau of Lawrence Tweedie, farmer, and his wife Janet (née Murray). He d. 19 Jul 1854 (Edinburgh will dated 3 Aug 1853 and proved 21 Oct 1854) at Trinity, near Edinburgh (and she m. 2ndly 13 Jan 1856 at 13 Duncan Street, Drummond Place, Edinburgh, Alexander Bain Wallace, teacher of music, who d. 11 Jun 1904 in London, son of Paul Wallace, teacher of music, and his wife Sarah (née Hodkinson)) and she d.s.p. 30 Dec 1874 and they were both buried in the Dean Cemetery, Edinburgh (Thomas & Anne Allan grave photograph).
